Pizza

This is a comment whore post.

I’m surfing and watching a Travel Channel show on pizza around the country.

The best pizza: not as thin as New York, not Chicago deep dish. Spicy. More than an average amount of tomato sauce. A good amount of cheese, your choice among the traditional. Best with tomato sauce, then toppings, then cheese on top. Toppings? No California stuff, chocolate or other dessert things. Beyond tomato, some onion and if you want peppers OK, but that’s it for vegetables. Mushrooms are a must. The basic fatty meats are a good idea: Italian sausage, pepperoni, bacon of some sort, hamburger if you like. It needs to be bubbling hot, reheated is acceptable but not recommended. Cold doesn’t get it (sorry Pos).

I'm a big cheese guy. With as few insides left as I have, sausage and I have largely parted company.

Chicago pizza is the best in the world, though. Granted, some deep dish crusts are better than others. I can probably still tell at taste Giordano's from Malnati's from Uno's from Gino's.... We have a place in the neighborhood that we've come to like a lot. The thin crust isn't too thin. We prefer stuffed pizza to deep dish. And my wife makes great pizzas, too. And I remember fondly the double-decker pizzas we used to get in Rogers Park....

Still, I'll forgive your dissing Chicago pizza... how can you tell taste from watching TV? (Or from eating at Dominos... or Pizza Hut... ugh....)

Atlanta doesn't have much to recommend it on the pizza front. Beyond the national chains, we have two local mini-chains that aren't too bad, Fellini's and Mellow Mushroom. Over the last couple of years a number of trendy New York "designer" places have opened up. I've not been to them; but, I'm told it is the height of gourmet pizza to serve it very thin with charring. Chicago style sound much better.

I and most of my family do not like pizza. We think it's because we didn't have it growing up so it never had the chance to be a staple. I don't like Italian food, period. Pizza is the worst (my humble opinion).

Why doesn't Cur have many insides left? Is it because he's a lawyer (wink and snicker).

Debo -- Probably. At least in part. No winking necessary!

Debo, you really should have been reading our friend from Chicago, insides aside. Go back something like two years at his place for the gory story.
