Why Does it Cost More to Fly from Dallas to New Orleans and Back than from Atlanta to Dallas and Back?

There’s a title for you. I have to go to Dallas in July and will be there over the weekend. I just looked into flying to New Orleans for the weekend. Airfare ATL to DFW is $209. DFW to New Orleans is $250 on Southwest which is far cheaper than American and Delta. Do I bite the cost bullet and go? Or do I do some research on how to kill time in Dallas?

Comment pandering: what is there to do in Dallas? I have the what to do in New Orleans covered: good restaurants and Harrah’s Casino.

If you come via Houston IAH or Hobby airport, I could tell you a couple of interesting things to do since I've learned my way around it in 5 years. No way you can re-route?

If you still must go through Dallas I found this site for you. Let me know.

Hey Milena, I avoid non-direct flights like the plague, so no Houston. I've thought about driving down to Austin, where I've never been. If I do, I'll wave at Houston on the left (?).

There is nothing to do in Dallas but shop.

Austin has the worst traffic I've ever experienced. They have a seriously underbuilt infrastructure.

But it's less than an hours drive from Dallas to the arts district in Fort Worth. The Amon Carter Museum, Kimbell Museum, and Modern Art Museum are all within walking distance of each other, with big beautiful sidewalks connecting them.

Fort Worth is my favorite Southern city. It doesn't get the credit it deserves.

To answer the titular question, though, I believe it has to do with the fact that Atlanta and Dallas/Fort Worth are major hubs, and New Orleans isn't. So, by way of supply and demand, going to New Orleans is like a "special trip" whereas Atlanta and Dallas, it's more like "as long as I'm headed that way..."

If that makes sense.
