So What Should I Read, Watch And Listen To?

No one called me on this; but, it came to me that when I quote something in the news in a post to rant about, it tends to be, that's too mild, it IS a quote from the NyTimes.com.

My daily news comes from the Gray Lady, the AJC (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution), National Public Radio and WSB the local news radio station.

They all skew left (if I count that WSB's national and international news comes from CNN). I read and watch other stuff. I watch FOX stuff, rarely, but usually not early enough to get real news, I'm left with the pundit shows.

So, my question to my readers, what should I read and/or watch on a daily basis to get what some of you might consider to be unbiased reportage, and others of you might consider to be an antidote for the left leaning stuff I listen to and read?

There's the problem...virtually all news is now "editorialized". I don't really think it matters which source you use, as long as you are not accepting it as absolute fact.

You tend to find the nut of the news article, and draw your conclusions based on that. Furhter, you do not purport to be delivering the "news", but an op/ed piece so, in my opinion, it is not truly relevant which particular piece of "news" got your gears going.

Anyone who truly cares about the story has the ability, and obligation, to research it further, if your op/ed piece tweaks their imagination.

I like news compendium sites such as Yahoo News that take news feeds from multiple sources. A quick scan there, or at Google News, lets me quickly decide if any of the headlines merit further investigation on my part, and there will be multiple articles to choose from if that is the case. I only read the print paper for the local news and the fun bits. The front section is already stale by the time the paper hits the driveway.

I don't watch TV news at all, unless something highly unusual has occurred (i.e. 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina). I do see it in the background at the TVs in the pub, but without any sound, which is the only way I can tolerate it.

I listen to NPR during my commute, and sometimes in the morning while getting ready for work. I like them because they are thoughtful, not shrill. Important stories are given enough time to be more than a collection of sound bites, and I also enjoy their other stories about people and events I would not otherwise hear about.

Thanks Bob and Fermi, I think I have to amend my post and ask "where do I find right wing news?" Probably isn't going to help much as the readership doesn't skew that way.

As to the local rag which Fermi reads, I'm pretty much the same way, plus sports, and I know you read the Tech coverage there. Poor Calvin up in cold, cold Detroit with mere millions.

Finally, you know you are messed up when you are at a pub, that Fermi goes to, or a bar, that I stop at and you have the bartender turn on closed captioning. I've actually taken a wireless laptop in on occasion.

I'm an internet news surfer myself. MSNBC, Economist, Reuters. Home delivery of the NYTimes and WSJ.

Virtually no radio in the car at all now that I'm able to listen to the iPod.

I've been lurking for sometime, thought I may as well start commenting.

I'm with you: New York Times on-line is my main source of news. The Washington Post is my other favorite, especially Howard Kurtz's Media Notes column. I'm also a big fan of Fark.com. The Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times, too.

Dave - you get them to turn on CC? I ask them to turn the news stations over to sports or trivia sometimes! I don't go to the pub to see that stuff...

Where to get right wing news? My Mom is a right winger, and she has FOX News on 24-7. When she can't watch Fox, she listens to right wing talk radio (mostly WSB around here).
