Six Degrees

I’m watching a Science Channel show about networks that takes off from the old Six Degrees From Kevin Bacon game. I’m only about half way through; but, apparently the theory holds true.

I want some empirical proof. Send an Email to someone that doesn’t read this blog and doesn’t know me (If it turns out they do, start again). Don’t give them my Email address, all they get is Dave Tank in Atlanta, Georgia. Tell them to send an Email to someone that they think might know me or someone who knows me, telling that person the same thing, etc.

I’ll let you know if I get an Email, and if I do, how it wended its way to me. I’m not sure if this is a meme, if it is, it sounds like more fun than most. It only has one step for each of you.

This is too easy. I'm sending mine to a brother in Philadelphia who was once a lawyer in Atlanta.

We'll see what happens. I didn't cheat.

I watched most of that show... OK, I dozed off, but that happens after dinner sometimes.... OK, most times....

I won't take up the challenge at this time... but I always thought the theory made a lot of sense and I was fascinated with the Hungarian likening network science to Asimov's 'psychohistory'....

At six levels, you reach 518,400 people that are six degrees seperated from you. Chances are pretty good that you know someone in that 518k who is in the 518k people of the other 518k people and so on and so on (hair commercial flashback).

My head hurts now.

I like the idea of the experiment, but do we really need more junk mail?

I'm only 1 degree separated from Kevin Bacon.

Heh heh.

Actually, I used to commute on the Long Island Railroad w/ a guy who used to be a professional actor and who co-starred with a young (post-"Animal House" but still pre-fame) Bacon in a play called "Forty Deuce," as well as its film adaptation. (Between you and me, I saw the film and it was ... not good.)
