God Love Him

From AJC.com:

Columbus — Georgia Republican Party chairwoman Sue Everhart said Saturday that the party's presumed presidential nominee has a lot in common with Jesus Christ.

"John McCain is kind of like Jesus Christ on the cross," Everhart said as she began the second day of the state GOP convention. "He never denounced God, either."

Everhart was praising McCain for never denouncing the United States while he was being tortured as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

"I'm not trying to compare John McCain to Jesus Christ, I'm looking at the pain that was there," she said.

Given the criterion, McCain is “kind of like” Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Buddha, the Dalai Lama, Confucious and a host of other religious leaders, of course other than the swearing and bad temper.

For what it's worth, John McCain did denounce the United States several times, in writing, while a captive of the North Vietnamese, and traded sensitive military information for medical care with 24 hours of his capture.

There's a huge gulf between the myth and reality, but the press loves a hero so the truth is very slow to seep out.

Very interesting topic Dave, I missed it. Why can't politicians ever shut up? Some just have to say such outrageous things just for publicity. But, I guess it works, we're talking about it and now I know who this Sue Everhart is.

So thomas...that's a pretty aggressive statement and insinuation. None of us know what the North Vietnamese did to him to get that information. Taking a shot at any POW is approaching a line that should not be crossed.

Wendy -- [sarcasm]never forget that this was founded as a Christian nation.[sarcasm off] Separation of church and state is advisable only when it is a separation of a non-christian church and state...

Dilf - I didn't see Thomas' point as villfying McCain's actions, as much as he was saying that this nutjob doesn't have her facts straight on even this minor point. For what it's worth, while in the military, we were told that as best as you can keep what you know secret, but no one would give you crap if you cracked. As DeNiro says in Ronin -- "No one holds out forever."

Can't blame McCain for what he said during torturing but you sure can blame him for his dirty mouth and vile temper.
