New Contest
In May, I think, I held a contest to be my 5,000th visitor which was won by Keith, see Recommended Sidebar.
Fermi probably was the actual winner, but, I couldn't tell from my Sitemeter statistics. I told her I'd run another contest at 7,500.
Amazingly, that mark is approaching. Sitemeter shows I've had sixty-seven hundred, and some change, visitors. The average per day is 38, but ranges from 30 to 60. Thus, with current trends, it should take three weeks to hit the mark.
I'll give you updates on numbers in a week. In the meantime, here are the rules:
Number 7,500, if a comment is left, wins. If number 7,500 doesn't leave a comment, the next visitor leaving a comment is the winner. The reason for this rule is that unless there is a comment which has a time stamp on it, I can't always identify the visitor on Sitemeter.
Comments must pertain to the post on which they are left. The reason for this rule is that I'm not doing this to drive traffic. The contest is intended to be something fun for me and regular readers. So, "which number am I?" doesn't get it. Also, though I have a couple of regular "anons" they can't win without a real live name and link, for the simple reason that, I can't contact them. This rule doesn't apply if you leave your name in the body of the comment like Debo does and I know where to find you.
I guess that's lawyerly enough. Oh, the prize. $50 credit/gift/etc. at the webstore of your choice that takes major credit cards.

I guess that puts me out of the running. :)
…besides, I'd trade a million gift certificates for one single hug from someone _really_ special.
And Dave's word is good! I can vouch for that.
Well, Penny and the current Anon, I hope you visit anyway. Here's your cyber hug Anon/Penny?
Hey Keith, only if ice cream is involved.
I didn't say the someone special was you, Dave. :) But thanks for the so-called hug.
A hug's a hug, so called, special or otherwise. Yours for the cyber claiming.
There's an actual prize. Wow.
I'm difficult to track because I use 3-4 different computers to surf. A notebook and PDM's Mac at home, and I have two work locations with unique computers. I remain not thrilled with my 3-2 work location split, but that is the way it is.
Fermi, hence the new rules. After the last contest, I figured out you surf with different IPs.
I could have all contestants send me all the IPs they use, but that seems like a bit more trouble than it's worth.
I'm rooting for you.
Great contest, Dave. Are you going to do your part and post more than every three days?
Debo Blue
PS-Where's my cyber hug?
Debo Blue
Sorry-- only one cyber-hug per customer. ;)
You can have an elbow rub, though. I've got one of those left here.
Debo, hugs everytime I read you.
Dave ~ this is Sonja's FAW. Read your messages and between you and her, I've really gotten into this blog thing. It's amazing how many people pop in and write to you and how many friends (not sure if they all stay virtual) you seem to make. Good luck with the contest and look forward to more of your reads.
Hey FAW, welcome.
Interestingly, very few of my real life friends or family read what I write. I think the prevailing attitude is "he's being weird again."
My earliest and most constant reader is Big Rick, who's mentioned now and again. He's quite real. Every now and again if I really offend him, he leaves a comment. He mostly is pissed that I don't read enough now and as a result am not a good source for trading books.
Since he's been subject to my jabbering for years, seeing it in print doesn't offend him any more than hearing me.
Not surprisingly, I've never met a blogging friend as most of them live hundreds and thousands of miles away.
I've thought on occasion about whether, were the people I read and that read me. neighbors, family, people I meet professionally, we'd turn out to be friends. Like all things in life, some probably yes, and others, no. The criteria? In real-life people see and hear the whole of you, something that's obscured on line.
Not many of my real life people read my blog either. My mom reads it almost every day. Sister reads when we haven't talked in a while. But old friends don't show up much at all. Ditto for my husband (I guess he figures he already knows what I have to say about things without reading my blog).
I think that if I knew about real life friends having a blog, I would read it. Hmmm. Maybe they have blogs and choose not to let on... I could see where that might be liberating.
None of my family and friends know about my blog. It's what allows me to vent freely to any who happen to venture by.
Dave, you made a comment that if all bloggers met in real life would we get along. I don't think we would. We're humans with the extraordinary power to hate on sight.
Debo Blue
A would love a virtual hug. BTW, Thanks for the luck.
Ok let's try the typing thing again...
How about,
I would love a virtual hug.
gawd, I'm a mess sometimes.
Dave ~ I love to read so, unfortunately, these blogs have become my new "muse". At my place o' employment, I've been around the same few people (with Sonja as the exception) who get into a rut, making it boring at times. With a bit of free time I'm earning here in the next few weeks, I find myself drawn to these blogs (yours and a few more Sonja's got on her page), moreso because they allow me not to think too much about my own life. You and Sonja (and that guy Ryan) seem to have a jovial time at this blogging and I think its pretty darn cool. I wonder if I've seen you in the store when on my trips up to ATL... heck, if you know my best friend; she's getting married and I'll be up there for the wedding (she also works at a law firm in ATL). I know, I know: there are TONS of law firms up there... but life can be funny that way ~
PS: Did I win the contest?!?? (just kidding)
Sonja, "A" thought you were just talkin' Southern.
Fermi, Pos did it the anonymous way for quite a while. From what I can tell, he's enjoying blogging more now that his family knows.
Now Debo, you know that given our power to hate on sight, we also have the converse power to love on sight.
FAW, you didn't win, you were only visitor number 6,828.
6828? You're really starting this thing early!
Yeah, well -- I'm still partially anonymous. Although a few people know about the thing and read it pretty frequently, I tr to forget about them when I am crafting a post. I do find myself changing things that I might not have changed before. So there's that.
As far as would we all get along in person, my only comment is that I find that my introverted nature keeps me holding back in conversation, even among friends, where I am much less introverted in my written communication. People who know me long and well, I can be myself around, but there are precious few of those.
